Artist Limelight:Tokyo Diiva Interview

Hey guys, i recently got a chance to do an online interview with an upcoming Glam/Pop Star, she goes by the name of  Tokyo Diiva, “that’s Diiva with two I’s” is what she would say. In the interview she gives us a insight on her lifestyle, where she grew up, her unique fashion sense and more. Check it out and be on the look out for her, because she is going to be huge!!!

1. When did you realize rap/pop was your passion?
(Glam Pop) I always wanted to entertain! iLove the stage, ilove being the center of attention and to amaze people when all the attention is on me. I modeled as a child and got serious about music around the age of 15. I made songs that people loved and it made me love the fact i can write something everyone else wanted to chant and sing long to, so if it aint broke dont fix it! i continued to do just that!

2. Growing up, what kind of music did you listen to? And who are some of your idols, or inspiration for your music?
Growing up i listened to everything. I am born into a Jamaican Family but both my Mom and Dad wasn’t stuck in a bubble of just reggae, i listened to everything. Pop, rock, Hip Hop, R&B, classic Motown everything was to find in my house and i just listened to it. i was Really young singing along to the Supremes. Of course i was IN LOVE with Michael Jackson, he’s sexy =) My idols are Michael Jackson, Madonna, Marilyn Monroe, Coco Chanel, and Andy Warhol.

3. How did you come up with the name Tokyo Diiva?
I always used to hang out in the Village were my friends out there would Call me a Diiva because of my kunty attitude, not that im mean, but im just very out there and extra. Tokyo of course came from Great Grandmother who was Jamaican and Japanese  i was always called Lil Tokyo when i was younger being i resembled her. It came back into play as a teenager because of my style and the way i dressed which reminded people of harajuku girls. Im a real animated character and it all just fell into place. I couldn’t get rid of the Diiva tho i tried many times hahah so i guess im stuck with Tokyo Diiva. . . .not too bad.

4. I love, love, love, your fashion. What would you say inspires your fashion? When did fashion become apart of your life?
Thnks My Love! My fashion comes from every and anything; Cartoons, Comics, Movies, Old People, Random things ill probably see on the street. i could watch Titanic today and realize i want to be a sexy captain tomorrow. Watch a Disney Movie and want to Look like a Fairy Or Ariel from the little Mermaid, as was my inspiration for my Make a Wish Ball Red Carpet Look! I love old people becuase they always seem to never throw away things and always have like a super kool broach or jacket, this is why i love shopping in Thrift/Vintage stores, its absolutely Magical.

5. What celeb would you say people compare you to the most?
haha, umm i dont really want to get into that!! I WILL say every time im out someone tells me i Look Like Janet, or La Toya or simply i look like im part of the Jackson Family and ill just respond “Michael is My Daddy” Lol

6. What would you want people to know about you that they don’t already know?
Umm i want people to know that i am not easily influenced and im not fake. I do what i want when i want how i want. My style isnt inspired by any ONE person, its mostly inspired by things, places, or fictional characters. Im Human Animation and i Love it. Im not black im Clear. Im not an artist im an Entertainer. I Love everyone & everyone loves me, they just dont know it yet.

7. When can we look out for an album?
Im working on the album now. Im not going to be a cliche artist like everyone else and say 2010 is my year yadda yah blah, Listen, it been my year since i was born. I plan on being a Epic entertainer, and working very hard on becoming just that. So when it drops, its going to be atomic.

8. How did you and Richie Rich meet?
Richie and i Met in 08 at my birthday party i was performing at. He came to the party invited by my good friend Michael Fredo from the Hilfiger Campaign, and ooonce he saw me he told me he loved me and we have been friends ever since. he’s such an amazing talented person! i Love him Much Much.

9. Where were you born and raised?

I am Born and Raised in New York, which i am most definately thankful for! I dont belong to just one borough i belong to the City. I feel my whole presence and attitude is definately credited to these prestigious streets and i will forever Love My State.

10. What are your top 5 favs on your ipod right now?
Hmmm as of today i have been running back; 1 “Take on Me” by A-Ha 2. “Viva la Vida” by ColdPlay 3. “Be my Baby” by The Ronnettes 4. Cryin by AeroSmith and 5. Michael Michael Michael Mr Jackson =)

  1. wow! Kudos to you Flytrini. I’ve heard of her before. Her style is very different as well… her fashion can be put in the catergories of the lady gaga’s and harajuku girls. I look forward to her music. I will def check her out.

  2. great interview, ill be on the look out for her stuff

  3. Tokyo Diiva seems like a real cool & different artist ..I like that!! Cause it seems like a lot of artist try to do different things so they’ll stand out, but to me it sounds like she’s naturally unique with her style, music choice, and influences in fashion.. LOVE IT! And cant wait to see more from her ..def wanna check out her fashion sense.

    “Michael is my daddy” lol

  4. A very well put together interview. Tokyo Diiva seems like a person who is very confident, yet down-to-earth. Her style seems very inventive and glamorous. Especially since she says she is Human Animation, so people should expect her wild creative style. Its seems her music will also have this same flavor. I like how she responded to the question about what can we expect from her album. She said when it drops it will be ATOMIC. I loved that. I also loved how she described herself..starting with I’m not black I’m clear…a very powerful statement. The world is definitely in for a treat with Tokyo Diiva flavor!
